BT Tigers: Week of Jan. 20th

George Washington and his Continental Army suffered much hardship during their winter in the Valley Forge area. Disease. Malnutrition. The occasional water issues in their hotel.

But one adversity General Washington never had to deal with was the atactical decision by an opponent to pull its goalie, already eliminated from contention and down three goals with 2.5 minutes left, allowing its opponent the opportunity for an empty net goal that would determine the fate of a third team.

At least now we know the reason why the headline on the homepage of the Valley Forge National Park website says, "Determined to Persevere."

The 14U Tigers persevered during their long weekend, going 2-1-1 at the Liberty Cup, coming within one dubious third-party decision of qualifying for the championship game. The Tigers played 156 minutes of hockey over the weekend, led for 40% of game play (60:16), trailed only for 20% (31:47), and battled through tight games as they've done all season long. Persevering with a determination that was fun to watch.

Now . . . on to the rest of the season.

BT Tigers: Week of Jan. 13th

We can't promise that the environment for every road game will match what we experienced on Saturday: a fun, competitive game played on an outdoor rink in an picturesque setting on a 60-degree January morning, with a ski lodge-caliber snack bar that smelled of bacon and maple syrup and the owner of the New York Rangers in the stands.

But we'll give it a try this weekend when we join the 10-team MYHA caravan to the suburbs of Philadelphia for the Liberty Cup tournament.

Everyone should have received a hotel room confirmation email by now. If you haven't, please let me know ASAP. At this point, any changes to your reservation -- including the day you plan to check-in -- should be made directly with the hotel front desk (610-647-6700).

As well, all families should read and acquaint themselves with -- and make certain that their children are fully aware of -- the hotel rules. As the team representative who will be signing this form, I appreciate everyone's help in ensuring our players conduct themselves accordingly and appropriately.

I believe there are still discounted tickets available for Flyers-Kings game on Saturday night, which many MYHA families are planning to attend.

Also, a professional photographer will be taking pictures at all the tournament games. If we have a parent who wants to coordinate the purchase of a team photo CD, please let me know; I will send along the photographer's contact information. They request we secure their services by Wednesday, Jan. 15th, so they can be sure to focus on our team, though I suspect we'll be able to book them at any point during the tournament.

Lastly, don't forget that all players are expected to be at the rink one hour prior to the scheduled start of every game. Tournament games could begin up to 15 minutes early, and we'll need to be prepared for that eventuality.
