MYHA Roundup: Nov. 13th
by posted 11/13/2019

The only thing better than a Sunday morning game for the 8U Cubs is two Sunday morning games, side by side.

For most teams, the 2019-2020 MYHA season is just heating up. For the 18U and 16U Midgets, things are wrapping up.

Those two teams play split seasons: which means they squeeze all of their travel games into the two-and-a-half months between Labor Day Weekend and the start of varsity season.

Though their regular-season schedules are complete, their travel seasons may not yet be done. Long Island Amateur Hockey League playoffs might be in the long-term plans for both teams, who head into their high school seasons in first place in their respective divisions:

  • 18U went 7-6-1 in LIAHL Tier II. Their 15 points are good enough for first place in mid-November, and might be enough to hang on to a playoff spot come mid-February.
  • 16U went 11-5 in LIAHL Tier III. A year ago, 22 points would have put them on the brink of a playoff spot, so there's a chance they'll get to reconvene for the 2020 postseason.

Regardless of how the playoff pictures clarify over the next three months, we know for sure that the 18U team will have one more series of games to play together. Winning the 18U A Division of the International Silver Stick Tournament's West Chester (PA) Regional back in September, the 18U Tigers earned one of 12 bids to the Silver Stick Championship in Sarnia, Ontario. That tournament will be held over MLK Weekend in January.

Elsewhere in the MYHA:

* The two Midgets teams are not the only MYHA teams in the race for LIAHL playoff berths. At 6-1-1 in league play, the 12U Tigers currently are well-positioned, sitting in a tie for third place. Likewise, the 10U Tigers (5-2) are in third place in their Tier II division.

* The 10U Tigers also compete in the Hudson Valley Hockey League. They currently sit at 7-0, in first place in the HVHL 10U A Division.

* The MYHA is home to three girls hockey teams, all of whom are having strong seasons. The 16U Girls (11-7) will compete this week in the Connecticut Girls Hockey League Division I Tournament. The 14U Girls (13-4-2) are ranked fourth in New York State. The 12U Girls (6-0-1) are currently ranked third in the nation among Tier II teams. It's pretty easy to see why Hommocks is considered the Home of Girls Hockey in Westchester County.

* This Saturday, Nov. 16th, is the second-annual Mamaroneck Hockey Fights Cancer Day at Hommocks. Students from the Stand Up 2 Cancer Club at Mamaroneck High School will be selling 50-50 raffle tickets during the four MYHA home games that day:

  • 7:00 a.m.: 8U Tigers vs. Beaver Dam
  • 4:10 p.m.: 12U Cubs vs. Greenwich Cardinals
  • 5:30 p.m.: 12U Cheetahs vs. Westchester Vipers (HVHL league game)
  • 7:00 p.m.: 12U Tigers vs. Long Island Rebels (LIAHL league game)

Half of the money raised will go to the winning ticket-holder (drawing will take place approximately 8:00 p.m.). The other half will go to the American Cancer Society.

If you would like to make a donation to the MYHA's Mamaroneck Hockey Fights Cancer, please visit our online campaign page (https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/mamaroneck-hockey-fights-cancer-2019), which will remain open through the end of November.
