CGHL Championship Tournament Rules 2025-26
All teams will use the USA Hockey roster frozen on 12/31/2025. U19 will use Rosters submitted on 11/1/25
USA Hockey rules will apply except as may be differ below.
Team Roster: The roster used will be the official USA Hockey roster for the team when it was frozen on 12/31/25. (11/1/25 for u19) All players MUST be on the USA Hockey roster and check in with Marshal when arriving at the rink. Coaches from each team will provide stickers (10) that match the official hockey roster. Please do not write in your players. Any changes to Rosters will need to go through the executive board prior to girls taking the ice, including goalies, and all girls and coaches have to be on the official USA hockey roster.
The Tournament Schedule is determined by the CGHL. Teams shall be listed as Home vs. Away. Away team to wear dark colored jersey. Home team to wear white or light-colored jersey. If teams do not have one or the other, head coaches are to mutually agree on jerseys prior to game time.
Clock & Scorekeeping
- The visiting team is responsible for providing a score keeper for each game.
- The home team is responsible for providing a clock keeper for each game.
Period Length of time
- U-10 games will be (3) 12-minute periods
- U-12 games will be (3) 15-minute periods
Typical Penalties
- U-10 - Minor – 1 minute, Major - 3 minutes
- U-12 - Minor – 1 minute and 30 seconds, Major - 4 minutes
Game schedules and times are set by CGHL. Games are to start promptly as scheduled. Teams should be prepared to take the ice 10 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Teams failing to appear at the start of the game will forfeit by a score of 1 to 0. Any team that forfeits will not advance to the semi-finals or the finals. If the forfeit is due to an "act of nature" the score of 1 to 0 will stand but the executive board can vote to let the team advance.
Overtime will only be played in the Semifinals and Finals. There will be (1) 5-minute sudden death period. If there is no scoring, there will be a 5-player shootout. Coin toss to determine which team will shoot first. If still tied (1) a new shooter from each team until the tie is broken. Shooters can be repeated after the initial five-round shootout is complete (five separate shooters are required for the initial round).
If during the third period of any game, a 6-goal differential exists, the clock will switch to running time, stopping only for penalties and goals. Stop time will resume if the differential drops below 6. Due to ice schedules, the tournament Marshal reserves the right to change the third period to running time.
• Each team will be allowed one timeout during all games.
Standings points for the round-robin portion of the tournament are awarded as follows
- Six (6) points for a win
- Zero (0) points for a loss
- Three (3) points for a tie
- Plus One (1) bonus point for a one-goal victory.
- Plus Two (2) bonus points for a two-goal victory.
- Plus Three (3) bonus points for a three- or more goal victory.
- Plus One (1) bonus point for a shutout.
Maximum points would thus be 10 for a single game (which would be a shutout with a victory of three or more goals). A win would ensure a team at least seven (7) points (six for the win plus a goal margin bonus).
A 0-0 tie would result in each team getting four points (three for the tie and one bonus point each for a shutout). A tie where each team scores at least one goal would result in each team getting three points.
In case of a tie in the standings following the round-robin portion of the tournament, teams advancing to the finals will be determined as follows:
- Winner of head-to-head between tied teams.
- Fewest goals allowed.
- Team with the fewest penalty minutes.
- Quickest first goal. The team that scored the quickest goal in their first tournament game will be ranked highest (In the event of a three or more-way tie, continue through the tie-breakers until two teams advance.)
NOTE: The Marshals of the tournaments will have a copy of the tournament rules/scoring. If that copy differs in any way from the rules and scoring on this website the Marshal's rules are the correct rules/scoring and should be followed. Tournament rules will be provided to the refs before the game. Marshals will text game sheets to the executive board after the games.
NOTE for D1/T3 teams: We will be crowning two winners at the end of the finals. At the end of play the winner of the final game will be the CGHL Champion Team. If that team is from CT, they will also be the CHC Tier 3 Champion team. If the winning CGHL Champion team is from MA or NY they will be the CGHL Champion but can not be awarded the CHC Championship. The runner-up team, if they are from CT will become the CHC Tier 3 Champion. If they are not a CT team, the CT team with the highest points after round-robin play will be awarded the CHC Tier 3 championship.
Note for Parents/Coaches:
Any suggestions, issues, problems or complaints parents have with anything to do with a game, other parents, players, game play, referees, etc. should be funneled to your coach.
Coaches in turn can speak to the marshal about any issues, problem, complaint or suggestions they feel needs to be addressed before, during or after the game/tournament.
The Marshal will in turn contact the executive board for directions on how to proceed. If needed, the executive board will reach out to CHC/commissioners/ref in chief/USA hockey as needed.
